“_________ah, why did you leave the party so early?” your mother came and sat beside you. You didn’t bother turning around and looking at her. You knew she was going to get worried seeing your puffy eyes and then a thousand questions were going to follow, asking you what was wrong.

“I had a headache so I left,” you mumbled from under the sheets.

“Alright,” she said. You could hear disappointment in her voice.

“Umma,” you stopped her. “Is there something you want to tell me?”

“Aniyo.”

“Please, tell me,” you insisted. She sat beside you once again and sighed.

“Yixing’s father proposed today,” she said. You felt somebody had just dropped a bomb on you. This was it. Fate’s way of telling you that your little love story was never going to happen. It was also a punishment for you because you knew well that it was your fault.

“_______ah, say something,” she nudged you. She started to pull the sheet from your face but you clenched it tightly.

“That’s great,” you said trying to cheer her up.

“Ye,” she sighed. Something seemed missing. She didn’t sound too happy. You were going to wait and ask her the next morning. At the moment you just needed some time to yourself.

You looked at the thousands of unanswered missed calls on your phone. You wanted to pick up the phone when he called but you knew it was only going to lead to disaster. It had been a month and you hadn’t seen him. You changed your bus routes. You stopped eating at the usual restaurants. You were doing  anything and everything, to avoid him.

“Ummmaa I’m home,” you yelled through the corridor. “I didn’t bring bread because I think it’s going to start raining soon but I’ll be sure to pick…” you stood stunned in the living room as you saw Yixing, his father and your mother.

“Oh, I’m so sorry,” you choked on your own voice. “Umm, I’m going to go change.”

Your mother gave you a warm, comforting smile. It seemed like she had something to say. “Don’t change. Come sit down with us.”

“I brought Yixing here too today,” his father began speaking. “Because both your mom and I wanted to make this announcement.” You knew exactly what he was going to say. You dreaded it and you hated yourself for dreading it. “We are going to get married soon.” He said with such excitement holding your mother’s hand that for a second you felt jealous. You were jealous of their happiness.

“Well what do you guys think?” he asked bringing you back to reality.

“Huh,” you responded as Yixing shook your elbow. “That’s great! When?”

“Sometime next month. We were thinking, the second Saturday?” he asked. “Oh and I’d suggest that you and your mother start packing. You guys will soon be moving in.”

You hadn’t even thought about that. Living in the same house with a person who you loved and having to call him your step brother. You couldn’t do it. You just couldn’t. You excused yourself politely and left the living room.

“It’s getting chilly out here,” Yixing said opening the door to the tiny balcony.

“Please go away,” you said without looking at him.

“You don’t have to hide those tears from me,” he said, now standing right besides you. He slid his hand around your waist. You tried to struggle but he won. You were now wrapped around his arms tightly.

“I feel pathetic. I felt jealous when they were giving me the news. I was jealous of their happiness. Can you imagine this? I’m such a horrible person.” You said between your sniffles.

“Shhhhhh,” don’t say that he said and kissed you on your temple.

“I can’t do this. I just can’t.” you said. He rested his chin on your head. You could feel his tears running down your hair. You pulled back and looked at him.

“I’ve loved once and I’ve lost. I don’t want that to happen to me again,” he said while shaking his head. “I don’t want to lose you.”

You tried to slip your hands out of his trembling hands but he didn’t let go. He didn’t want too. He was trying his best to keep you from going.

“Don’t you see how happy they are? Do you really want to do this to them?” you asked.

“I don’t want to let go off you ______.”

“You have too. For them.”

“No!” he shook his head. “I’d given up on life but you showed me that I could keep moving on. You gave me hope. You made me fall for you. And now you’re telling me that you want to leave?”

“I know it’s my fault but I don’t want it to affect them. Besides I’m leaving for Canada after the wedding.”

“What” he gasped. “No, no no!” he repeated pulling you back into an embrace. “You can’t do that.”

“I have too.” You began to cry once again. “You and I both know it won’t work like this.”

He pulled back and joined his soft lips to yours. Your wet cheeks touched his. He slid his hand to the back of your head and pinned you against the wall.

“We shouldn’t do this,” you said between kisses.

“Please don’t stop me,” he replied.

“You’ll find someone better than me.”

“I’ll never find anyone like you.”

“Oppa..”

“Shhh,” he shussed you by reconnecting his lips to yours.

***********************************************************

“Seriously, I don’t understand the need for me to try on a wedding dress too. It’s your wedding not mine,” you whined as your mother pushed you into the dressing room. You were already annoyed at the fact that she’d invited Yixing. You could barely make eye contact with him after that night in the balcony. You wanted to make it pretty clear that there was nothing between you and him.

“Yixing, do you want to try something too?”

“Uh, no thank you,” he rejected politely. “Oh come on, try this one. I’m sure your father will love it.” He surrendered to your mother’s pleading and took the tuxedo from her.

You and him both got out of the dressing room at the same time, coincidently.

“Why are you wearing that?” you asked him and turned to face your mother. You were a little surprised as you saw Yixing’s dad standing beside her.

“Now don’t they look perfect?” he asked your mother.

“Perfect indeed,” she said with a big smile on her face.

Both you and him were confused.

“What do you mean?” you asked. Your mother stepped forward and cupped your face with her hands.

“Did you really think that you were ready to make such a big sacrifice at such a young age? How dare you think of my happiness before yours.”

“Umma what are you saying?” you interrupted.

“Shhhh,” she placed her finger on your lips. A tear rolled down her cheek. Your heart sank. You could bear anything in the world except see your mother cry. “Yixing’s father and I have already received the joys of being with someone we loved in our lives but you two,” she now looked at Yixing too. “It’s your first time and you guys are throwing it away like nothing had happened between you.”

“Umma how did you?” you asked really embarrassed.

“We saw you two in the balcony the other night.”

You were disgusted by your existence. You couldn’t do one small good deed for your own mother who had sacrificed so much for you. You hugged her. “I never meant for any of this to happen..” you said between sobs.

“I know honey, I know.” she stroked your hair. “I just want you to be happy.”

“We want both of you to be happy.” Yixing’s father added. “I’ve seen my son go through a lot and I certainly don’t want to be the reason for his misery.”

You pulled back and looked at Yixing. He seemed hurt too. He felt just as bad as you did.

“I’m so sorry appa,” he mumbled not being able to make eye contact.

“Don’t be,” he said pushing you towards him. “Look at the two of you. You guys make a perfect couple.” He wiped the tears out his eyes. “You guys deserve to be together.”

The more they said that, the more you hated yourself.

“________ah, don’t hate yourself for this.” Your mother said. You were surprised as to how she could read your thoughts.

“He loves you a lot.” She said while nodding. “Do it for me.”

You felt Yixing hold your hand and interlace his fingers into yours. You were still unsure of what to do. He, without any hesitation planted a kiss on your cheek.

You heard your mother and his father chuckle.

“They are so innocent and pure,” she said.

“Yes they are,” he replied.

A smile spread on your face. You tightened your grip on Yixing’s hand and looked up at him. He was looking right back at you with a reassuring smile.

You didn’t have to leave after all..
