Your Wish Is My Command

Masquerade [Lay]

“_________ ah, are you going to come to my birthday party or not?” Your friend asked with a slight hint of irritation. She’d already asked you this question a bunch of times before. You didn’t like social gatherings, especially the ones your friend went too. Her dad was really rich so the parties she went to were high class. She always invited you but you turned her down because you felt like you won’t be able to fit in. This time was different however since it was her boyfriend’s masked birthday party.

“_________!” she shook you this time.

“Huhnhh! Umm yeah okay. I’ll come.” The very next second you found yourself wrapped tightly in Eunsol’s arms.

“Oh the things I do for you,” you said making a funny face.

“Saranghae!” she said excitedly.

“Saranghae!” you mumbled back.

“I still don’t understand why he’s having such a big birthday party? When I have a birthday party I go to a small bubble tea shop with a friend,” you said making a face.

“Oh Shhhh! Don’t let him hear you. A lot of ‘cool’ people are here so try to mingle with them,” Eunsol nagged you.

“Aish,” you made a face while putting on the mask.

You were glad it was a masked birthday party. That way nobody would be able to see your face and you wouldn’t be as nervous as you usually are. Most girls brought dates. They were having fun on the dance floor while you stood in the corner playing with your drink. You sipped some but immediately threw it back in the glass. It was disgusting. You looked around to make sure no one saw you. Everybody was busy in their own world. Nobody would care to look at a random girl standing in the corner minding her own business.

You’d started to regret the idea of coming to the party. Being amongst so many people, you were still lonely. A cold breeze of air touched your bear arms. ‘Ahh  a balcony,’ you thought looking at the open door. Squeezing through the crowd you somehow made it outside. It was chilly but at the time anything was better than staying inside and humiliating yourself.

The dark sky was lit with beautiful stars. It looked beautiful. You didn’t smile that often but looking at the glittery dark sheet always cheered you up. Memories of your childhood started coming back to you. Your dad would take you to the rooftop. He would lift your hand up and then draw patterns, connecting the stars. He would then tell you fairytales about princesses. You always wondered when your prince charming was going to come and sweep you off your feet. You missed your daddy. Your only wish on every 11:11, every shooting star, every eye lash that fell on your cheek, was for him to come back. Tears started forming in your eyes but you quickly wiped them away.

“It’s not nice for a pretty girl to be crying at a party like this one,” somebody suddenly came besides you and said. You calmed your nerves and turned sideways to see who it was. He wasn’t looking at you. He was looking up at the sky, just like you were a little while back. His skin looked beautiful in the dim light and the dimple on his cheek was killing you on the inside. You were a sucker for dimples.

“I’m not crying,” you mumbled.

“It’s okay. You don’t have to lie to me,” he said. You looked back at him. He seemed to speak without any emotions.

“Were you thinking about someone?” he asked. You shook your head. He turned his face towards you for a brief second then looked away.

“Every time I look at the stars I think about the person I loved dearly,” he began. Your heart sank for a second. You wanted to know who it was but asking him would be weird. You barely knew him.

“Who was it?” you asked hesitantly.

“My childhood friend,” he said and then paused. “We loved each other.. a lot until..”

“Until?” you asked.

“Until.. … aaaa..” his voice chocked. “Do you want to dance?” he changed the topic immediately.

“What?” you whispered at the sudden question.

“Ye. Come on..” he offered you his hand. You felt like some sort of a force was pulling you towards him. You took his hand and followed him inside. Your favorite song Seven years of love’ was playing. He placed one hand around your waist and held your hand in the other.

“I don’t know how to dance,” you said meekly.

“I’ll teach you,” he pushed you back as you twirled then he pulled you close once again. His eyes looked beautiful as they stared into yours.  You couldn’t help but look at the slight dip next to his smooth lips. Was he even real? You asked yourself. You wanted to see the face behind the mask.

You heard him chuckle.

“What?” you asked. He shook his head, keeping the faint smile on his face.

“What?” you asked again.

“It’s the way you’re looking at me,” he said. Your face turned red and your hands started shaking. You’d never failed to embarrass yourself.

“Mianhe,” you said looking away.

“Don’t be nervous,” he said squeezing your hands to let them relax. “You’re doing great.”

The song was coming to an end. He was going to leave soon. You didn’t want him too. You wanted him to stay. You wanted to know more about him.

“You didn’t tell me what happened to her?” you asked. His smile disappeared and his skin grew pale.

“I’m sor..” you began to say but he cut you.

“She died in a car accident.” You looked up instantly. You were having difficulty registering the words in your head.

“What?” you gasped. He leaned in and gave you a light peck on the cheek. The song ended, and his hands slowly slipped out of yours. You stood there as if struck by lightning. Before you knew it, his figure faded into the crowd.

“Wait..” you whispered but it was too late. He was gone. How could it be that a guy as charming as him went through so much in life? You felt a tinge of pain in your heart. You didn’t know when you got pushed off of the dance floor by the crowd. You were now standing in the corner, your eyes wandering from side to side, trying to look for him. Your brain kept telling you that whatever happened wasn’t real but your heart kept poking you to go look for him.

As always you listened to your brain. It would be stupid to go after him. The brief encounter you’d had with him was beautiful enough. You wanted to remember it just as it was. Maybe that’s how it was meant to be. Nothing more, nothing less. You sighed and looked once more at the keyed up crowd and then turned around shaking your head.

You were going to remember that night forever…

One month later..

The mall wasn’t as crowded as it usually was on Sunday mornings. You walked, deeply engulfed in your thoughts. Somebody suddenly bumped into you.

“Oh I’m sorry,” the guy held you for a second before moving on again. You brushed the hair off of your face quickly in response to the familiar fragrance. It was quick enough for you to catch a glimpse of the slight dip next to his lips. You knew it was him. It had to be. The bags you had in your hand dropped, as you stood their staring at him fading into the pool of people once again. Just like a month ago, your heart poked you to go after him. Stop him. You took a step.. but then shook your head and turned around. A smile appeared on your face as a line ran through your head, ‘Leave it the way it is…’

Lay turned around and saw you walking. A voice in the back of his head kept telling him that you were the one. You were the girl from the party. He hit the back of his head as a smile appeared on his face. He too turned around shaking his head and continued walking. He was also going to ‘Leave it the way it was..’
