He turned around as soon as you approached the corner of the street. You knew he had been waiting for you. At first you weren’t so sure but as days, weeks and then months passed you realized that he stood near the street light everyday around 5 o clock. That’s the time you usually walked back home from university.

Today you were finally going to confront him. He had some serious explaining to do. Clenching your books tightly to your chest you headed to his direction.

“Hey you,” you called out from behind. He didn’t move an inch. “Hey you!” you said a little louder this time. Still no response. You grabbed his sleeve and pulled him. He looked at you with horror filled eyes. You could hear the music being blasted through his earphones. His hoodie covered most of his face. He pulled it off and released his hand from your grip.

“Are you stalking me?” you tried to interrogate.

“Are you out of your mind?” he asked with a disgusted face. Your expressions changed to that of a confused person. You saw a slight smirk appear on his face. He rolled his eyes and very calmly walked away while you stood and watch him leave.

**********************************************************

You didn’t see him near the poll after that. He was gone- maybe for good. You did miss not seeing his hooded face everyday but at the same time you were also relieved.  Life went back to normal. You became more observant to your surroundings. Every guy with a hoodie would be the object of your observation.

.

.

Two weeks from then:

You walked down the busy street, lost in your own thoughts. Some random guy kept repeating the word “hey!” to someone. It had started to annoy you. ‘Is the other person deaf or something?’ –you thought to yourself. Just then someone put their hand on your shoulder and gave it a light squeeze. You could hear his heavy breathing. “Hey!” he said once again but this time in a barely audible voice. You stopped and turned to look at him. It was the guy in the hoodie.

“Oh my goodness! You’re back!” you said shrugging his hand off of your shoulder.

“Aaaaaaa…. Yea!” he said as if accepting his crime.

“Why?” you asked and began to walk once again.

“You were right. I was stalking you… but I don’t think that would be the right.” He snapped his fingers. “I was observing you.”

“A little too closely don’t you think?” you asked with a faint smile.

“ Aaaaish! You …could..maybe.. say that!” he chuckled, scratching the back of his head. The two of you turned onto a less busy street.

“So what do you want?” you asked.

“You!”

Your head shot in his direction but he immediately added to his words.

“I mean.. I want to..show you something,” he bit his tongue.

“Show me something?” you asked. “I don’t even know you.”

“I know. I know. That’s why I was thinking we should get to know each other some more.”

“And why would I want to do that?”

“Oh trust me, you want to,” he said, this time smiling more freely. He grabbed your hand and pressed a small paper on it.

“What’s this?” you asked. He shrugged his shoulders and in only a few moments he was gone. You stood there, watching him leave and then at the paper he had given you. He was clearly nuts. You didn’t want to have anything to do with such a guy. Still, you put his souvenir in your bag and headed back home.

**************************************************

You ran your fingers seven digit phone number scribbled on the paper. No flower was needed to debate the issue. You were already doing it inside your head. After a lot of thinking you finally picked up your phone and sent him a text message.

What do you want’-

‘Just a dinner-‘ he replied instantly.

***************************************************

You sipped the water from time to time and occasionally biting the top of the straw. He sat opposite you, very carefully scanning your nervous state. You wished he would just give up the act and actually talk. And then you cursed yourself for texting him. ‘What if he is a secret murderer who is out to get me..?’- you thought.

“I’m not a murderer,” the guy said as he interlaced his finger and rested his chin upon them. You looked at him, slightly scared and slightly surprised. So he could read your thoughts too.

“Who are you?” you asked with suspicion. He didn’t answer, quite as you had expected. The food was soon served. The two of you ate quietly- him looking at you while you tried your best possible to escape his gaze.

After dinner, he took your hand and walked you out of the restaurant.

“Where are you taking me?” you asked.

“Shhhhh,” he said pointing to his lips. “You’ll find out soon.”

You had started to get annoyed but if he had made all this effort than he must have something special to show you. You let him drag you through crowded streets, isolated parks and lighted river banks. The two of you finally reached a clearing. He let go off your hand and lay down on the grass. You looked at him oddly, trying to understand what he was doing. He patted the empty space next to him for you to lay.

“You’re going to miss it,” he said patting it once again. You gave up and lay next to him. For some odd reason you felt very calm on the inside. The sky, although cloudy, was still lit with a few twinkling stars.

“So this..”

“Shhhh,” he said once again. He slid his hand down your arm and then held your hand. “Watch,” he said as he lifted your hand and at the exact moment lights from different restaurants afar lit up. They formed different patterns, adding to the twinkle from the moon. The moon, hidden behind the clouds started to show a little.

“This is beautiful,” you whispered. “How did you know about this?”

“This is the only area in the city where all these lights intersect. No one comes here…”

“But you do,” you said rolling over. He nodded and in that moment for the first time you saw him smile with all his heart.

“Why did you bring me here?” you asked again- hoping he would give you an answer this time. He looked into your big doughy eyes. They demanded an answer.

“Because I want you to see how beautiful the world is,” he finally said. Your mouth fell half open.

“What do you mean?” you asked. He sat up and pulled you up too.

“Let me tell you a story… A story of a girl who was lonely and scared. She was afraid she would disappoint her parents. She knew she had to do everything to make them proud. So she went to a business school instead of her dream Art school. She sighs as she walks through crowded streets every day, clenching her books close to her chest… But wait..there’s more. She is also hurt. It’s because of a boy.”

Your head shot up in his direction. How could he possibly know all of this? Each and everything he had said was true. Who was he? Why was he here? What did he want? You couldn’t understand any of this. Your heart began racing in fear.

“She loved him even when he was very controlling. She gave him her everything. Then one day the boy broke her heart and ran away with someone else. It hurt her but she let it be suppressed. She knew she was too young to worry about such things. And so she went on to live her life with an unhappy, broken heart.” He leaned in and whispered these last words, “A heart that needed healing.”

A tear rolled out of your eyes and fell on your hand. “How do you know all of this?” you whimpered.

“It’s written on your face,” he said. You had many more questions but you knew it was useless to ask. He never gave you the answers you wanted. He got up and so did you.

“__________,” he said your name.

“Hmmmm,” you asked still shuffled in your thoughts.

“This story needs a happy ending…”

You looked up towards him but he was already leaving.

“Wait,” you called after him. “What’s your name????”

He stopped at a little distance, turned half way and said, “Most call me Key!” – And then he was gone.

2 months later:

You opened the letter your mother had handed you a few minutes ago. It had a bus ticket to Ulsan and one statement written at the end of a small paper –

‘Let’s go live the life you deserve- Key’
