It was finally over [Leo]

His voice was hoarse when he had called you. You asked him if he was drunk but he denied it plainly and asked you to meet him.

“Where?” you’d asked.

“The café …at the end of the street,” he had replied.

The cold winds that touched your feet every time someone opened the door announced the arrival of bad news. He had seemed very distant lately. Not making it on time on dates, never picking up his phone, pretending to be busy when out with friends. And then suddenly out of nowhere he calls you tell you he wants to meet.

The door opened once again, bringing another wave of cold breeze, but this time along with it came the soft familiar fragrance. You fixed your dress from under the table and got up with a cheery smile. You could feel the butterflies dancing in your stomach with each step he took. He sat down at the table with a rather serious face. You could tell he was trying hard to act sober. With a wave of your hand you ordered your usual orders to the lady standing at the counter. She nodded and then disappeared into the kitchen.

“So…” you said to start a conversation. He looked at you for a split second, but then something outside occupied his gaze. He was silent while you were anxious. You made an attempt to hold his hand but, you felt his body stiffen.

“What’s wrong?” you asked. He looked at you as if trying to form the right words to say. He seemed hesitant. His eyes too ashamed to meet yours. You could feel your heart sinking at the point and then everything changed when he jumped up.

His hands flew in the air in frustration. “I don’t think we should be together anymore…” he said.

“What?” you got up too. “What’s wrong? I thought everything was going just fine.”

“It’s not,” he shook his head. “We are two different people…from two different worlds. You may not realize it but it’s really hard for me sometimes.”

You began to say something but you soon realized that you didn’t have anything to say. How were you going to counter his argument without sounding desperate? For anything, you had no idea he felt this way.

“I…” you started but he cut you right away.

“I’m sorry __________!” he said and then without waiting another second, he left.

Two months later:

The first morning sun light felt good for some reason. Your face was decorated with a peaceful smile. It was your first in two months. That day felt different. You wanted to do something. You bounced out of bed and danced your way to the bathroom.

.

You walked past the shops you had walked past a million times with him. In the last two months you felt your heart crushing every time you walked down that street but that day, you felt nothing. In fact, you started to notice stores you had no idea existed. You began to enter a boutique when a young voice called from behind you.

“Excuse ma’am,” he said. You turned around to a young gentleman with a bright smile. “Would you like to try our makeover sample? It’s a special we have going on this week…”

You thought for a little bit but soon agreed. “Why not!” you said cheerfully and followed the guy into his salon.

A person, who looked like he had more authority came and examined your face. You could tell how judging his nature was but when he started speaking it was quite the opposite of what you thought. He was much nicer. He began giving out instructions and within minutes, 3 different assistants began working on you. Your tense body began to relax after a while. You let yourself loose.

A few hours later:

When you looked at yourself in the mirror you wanted to cry. For the first time in years you felt beautiful. No make no nothing. They had somehow managed to make your face change without the help of any of that.

“Do you like it?” the guy asked. You nodded, still dazed and confused looking at your reflection. The guy handed you your glasses as you got up.

“You’re beautiful… and don’t let whatever it is bring you down..” he said patting your back.

“What do you mean?” you asked.

“That fake smile may convince others but not me,” he replied. You wanted to ask more questions but he pretended to act busy so you would leave. You smiled faintly as you left the store.

In the six months you had spent with Leo, you had never paid much attention to your appearance. You began to wonder how or why he liked you in the first place. No wonder he broke up with you. He was never planning on staying. You were just one of the many girls he had played around with.

You remembered your attitude from earlier that morning and suddenly you wanted to go back to that. You had cried enough in the two months since he broke up with you. It was time to move on and show a better image of you to him. You were going to bring down that rich boy’s ego.

All the money you had saved, you spent it shopping for yourself. It felt good, especially after spending 6 months buying so many gifts for him.

A few weeks later:

You swung your head from side to side as the loud music touched your ears. This was your second time in the past week going to a club. Your friends were amazed with your new look and increasing confidence. Many male colleagues from work had boldly asked you to dinner but you refused politely. You were not looking for a relationship anymore. Being single was much better.

You saw the light on your cell phone screen flash. It was another one of your male friends. He had been asking you to lunch for a while.

“Why don’t you say yes?” your friend asked, also looking at your phone. You sighed deeply. “I’m not looking for anyone right now.”

“___________! You know he wasn’t the right guy for you. Move on from him.”

“I have,” you said smiling confidently. “I don’t feel anything for him anymore but I really think I need some more time before I start dating again.”

You looked at your watch. It was getting late. Before the drunk, dirty crowd walked in, you made your way out of the club. It was a little chilly for a midsummer night. You rubbed your arms to relax the Goosebumps.

“__________!” you heard a familiar voice say. Your body turned itself around without you even realizing it.

“Is it really you?” Leo asked. You felt someone clench your heart. It began to hurt again. As much as you wanted him to see the new you, you were devastated upon seeing him again. He looked bright and handsome as ever. You nodded, as his mystique figure approached you in the silver moonlight.

“You look so…beautiful,” he said sliding his hands down your arm. You felt hypnotized by his presence. “What.. happened to you…? How did you …change?”

Change…-  as soon as that word touched your ears, you felt your heart ache return. He was the reason you had broken down completely. You could never forgive him. You freed yourself from his grip and began to walk away. It hurt, but it was the best thing you could do.

“Where are you going?” he asked. You didn’t care to reply.

“___________ wait!.. … don’t you miss me?” he asked once again. Even now, his ego poured out in every word he uttered. “_______ don’t ignore me like this.”

You couldn’t help but smile condescendingly at his condition. He was desperate one this time. You were glad you learnt of his true nature or you would have spent your whole life in regret.

After a while you stopped hearing his voice. You could tell he was still standing behind you at a distance. “I don’t need you anymore…” you said aloud and began to walk once again.

It was finally over.
