Once upon a time, in a story that’s not this one, there was a happy ending. And nobody died in that one.

It all started on a dark and stormy night …

“…Hello?” you call out. “Anyone there …?“ You cautiously approach the figure, gripping your umbrella tighter, ready to use it as a weapon.

The walls of the alley were covered with layers of graffiti. A dumpster sat at the end with a shadowed figure besides it. As you get closer, you could see that it was a person — probably male judging from the height — with only a black hoodie over his head to shield him from the rain. In his left hand was a drawstring bag; in his right — a baseball bat. His must have picked up your movement because he raised his head. You speed up, hoping to reach the restaurant’s door before he could reach you. Out of the corner of your eyes, you see him coming — running almost. Adrenaline rushed through your body. Your heart hammered against your chest. As your hands dart for the handle, he tightly snatches your wrist. A flash of lightning brightens the alley, followed by a clap of thunder. And then, the entire street was swallowed by darkness.

You scream.

Hold on. Hold just a minute. I bet you’re confused. How did you end up in this poor predicament? Only time travel will tell! Yes, you read correctly, time travel! And don’t worry; it’s nothing to be worried about. Let’s rewind seven hours…

"Will you please go out with me?” You look up to see Taemin— no, it was Kai— no … yeah, it was Kai looking straight at you. It was the pair of headphones that always hung around his neck that gave him away. “I said,“ he repeated, “Will you please go out with me?”

You eye him suspiciously for a second and reply, “No. I like Taemin,“ and turn back towards your homework. He looked flabbergasted.

"Why? Why would you ever like m— I mean, him?”

“Because he’s easy to talk to, smart and talented — more gentlemanly. Better looking too.” You reply without hesitation, focusing on the math problem in front of you. “Can you leave? I have work to do and classes to pass. Unlike you.“ You bite your lip, not meaning to say the last part. He was fuming mad.

"How dare you say that about me? Taemin and I look exactly the same! And I study more than anyone in this class! Uggh! I don’t know why I want you anyway!” and he stomps away, slamming the door behind him. You stick your tongue after him and return to your problem. Kai likes me? You secretly smile at the thought — OH!

WAIT!

HALT! I forgot to mention something important!! To clear things up a bit, let’s go back one more hour…. Ah, yes, here it is:

Kai sat on the school’s rooftop with a spiral notebook spread open on his lap and a dulled pencil in hand. He peered below into the herd of students playing ball, gossiping and enjoying their lunches with friendly company — his eyes scanning the crowd for that one face. He pulls back and looks down at his notebook. Dear____, he writes carefully. I know this may come as a shock to you, but I have always really liked you. Even now when writing this I — he stopped abruptly. “AH!“, he screams, ripping out the page and crumbling it into a ball before letting it roll from his palm. He could feel his cheeks reddening at the thought of her and buried his head into his arms to shield his embarrassment.

"Lets see what you have here”, says a familiar voice. Kai didn’t have to look up to know that it was Taemin. Although they were born identical twins, they couldn’t be any more different. Taemin was the self-proclaimed ‘shy’ and ‘innocent’ one who always did well school, sports, and basically everything he put his mind into, all while managing to steal the hearts of countless young girls at the same time. Kai on the other hand did horribly in school despite working harder than his brother in every class, subject or sport, thus earning his nickname as The Other One. “Aw, still trying to write your love letter, little brother?“ Taemin mocked with a smirk.

"Go away.”

“But that’s no fun, Kai! Besides, littering is bad,” but seeing that his brother wasn’t in the mood to joke, Taemin instead sat down besides Kai, patting him on the back. “You know, you can just tell her directly. Tell her that you like her.“

"I can’t Taemin. You know I can’t. I know she doesn’t like me. Nobody does. I’m horrible at everything I do.” Kai whispered back.

Taemin could feel a tug of pain in his heart. “You’re good at dancing. You’re an amazing listener. “And—" he thought for a moment, “you’re quite handsome too, maybe even as handsome as me.“

At that, Kai replied with a simple “Jerk,” but a smile played on his lips as he playfully pushed Taemin away. “I wish I was more like you.“ He pulled his knees towards his chest. “It would be so much easier if you could just tell her for me…” Taemin looked at Kai straight in the eye for a moment. “Don’t look at me like that, you look like you’re plotting something evil again.“

"Do you want me to tell her?”

“What?”

“I’m serious. If you don’t confess within the next hour, I’ll tell her I like her myself.”

“What?!” Kai shot up. “You are a jerk— and a thief at that!!“

"No, no, no, calm down! What I’m trying to say is that we’re identical twins … right?” Kai returned a tiny nod, still confused. “And since we are, I can confess for you! I’ll pretend to be you and tell her that I like her. How’s that soun—"

“No way,” Kai injects before Taemin could finish. “That would be lying to her.“ He looks at his shoes.

"Come on Kai. Just once. And it wouldn’t be lying, because technically, you like her, so I have to like her too, right?” Taemin stops, his hands gripping Kai’s shoulders. Kai remained focused on his shoes.

See? There we go, you got the gist of what happened right? So now let’s continue where we left off:

Taemin stormed out of the classroom muttering of the nastiest words he could think of under his breath. Just as turned from the door, Taemin saw Kai leaning against the wall. His body was stiff and his face was downcast.

“Kai… You didn’t hear that did you…?”

Kai jolted at the question. “Huh? Hear what? Haha, sorry, I was um — thinking of something.“ He forced a smile. “Man, I think I had too much to eat for lunch today, gotta hit the toilet!” And he spun around and ran away.

Taemin watched Kai disappear into the crowded hall and sighed. “What an idiot …"

Reentering the classroom, he took a seat beside you. “___, we need to talk.“

You weave your way through the maze of restaurants and buildings, a hand-drawn map in hand. The sudden storm seems to foreshadow bad news. A gust of wind heaved through, coming dangerously close to snatching your umbrella away. You look back down at the map. “Taemin said it should be around here somewhere.” You recall his expression when he said to meet him after school at a restaurant. It was so desperate, you couldn’t refuse him. Now, regret was beginning to creep in, and you longed to return home.

Turning the corner into an alley, you finally spot the restaurant sign. With it, you see an outline of the person beneath the blinking neon lights. “…Hello?” you call out.

“Calm down ‘___’!” said the figure. “It’s me!“

He must’ve thrown his hood back for you to see his face, but you couldn’t make out anything in the darkness. The two of you stayed frozen in place, his hand still wrapped around your wrist, but his grip had loosened. He was  so close, you could even feel the heat of his body against yours. It was silent for a moment before the neon sign flickered a few times, and the electricity returned. He gently released you and you finally get a good look at him.

"Taemin?!” you could hear your voice shaking, but in relief that it wasn’t some random rapist. “Why were you standing in the rain like this when you could be in the restaurant?!“

He looked taken back. “I should be asking you that. What are you doing here?”

“You were the one who begged me to come here claiming that you had something to tell me!” You couldn’t help but shout. The rain came to a light drizzle until it faded away.

He was clearly tired, dark circles lined beneath his red rimmed, puffy eyes, making him appear as though he had just cried. His clothing was soaking wet, and thick masses of hair clung to his forehead. “I didn’t leave the practice with an umbrella because it was still sunny then. They thought I was a beggar, as wet as I was, and wouldn’t let me in. And I’m actually Kai.“ He looked directly at you and quickly added, “But it’s not what you think! Taemin told me to meet him for dinner — he said had something to tell me!”

You hold his gaze while registering what had happened. “That jerk set us up didn’t he?!“ After all this time… You push Kai away and begin trudging home. You felt a little bad, seeing the fusion of sorrow and guilt in his expression, but more than that, you were furious with Taemin. He was the only person who knew how she felt about Kai, yet he still set up the date.

"I’ll walk you to the bus stop.”

“Go home Kai, I can walk by myself.” But he ignores your remark and continues to follow you. Seeing how reluctant he was to leave, you pace on ahead. The short journey was painful as the encounter. Not only was Kai following nine strides behind, but there loomed a terrible silence . You sigh in relief when you finally spot the bus stop, dash over, and take a seat. Kai mimicked your movements, settling himself at the far end of the bench, away from you. You fidget at the awkwardness in the air — tapping your toes and fiddling with your fingers — all while praying the bus would come sooner. You wrack your mind, hunting for something to say. Talking to Taemin had always been easy — he was approachable and direct when it came to what he was thinking. Kai however …

“The night is beautiful isn’t it?” both you and Kai say at the same time. His voice sounded so sincere and honest, you were afraid he would discover the fraudulence in your own. But he just softly laughs and it’s quiet again.

“If the sky is always filled with stars, why isn’t it always morning?”

You look to him in surprise of his sudden question. His eyes were closed and his head leaned against the advertisement board placed behind the bench. He looked different than usual — calm and relaxed under blinking patches of yellow and orange. It was then that you notice how many fireflies there were. They danced around the bench and sprinkled the grass, setting the field ablaze in their warm light. You close your eyes and lean against the hard board, listening to the choir of crickets and cicadas filling the night with music of their own as well as the soft humming of cars passing in the distance. It was beautiful.

“If it was always morning, then we wouldn’t be able to experience lovely nights like this, wouldn’t we?” He doesn’t say anything for a while and you wonder if he fell asleep.

”___?“

"Hm…?”

“I like you.” You open your eyes to see if he was talking in his sleep and it seemed reasonable considering how he was in the exact position as earlier. Making sure not to wake him — if he was asleep that is — you silently slide over towards him, filling the space between, and gently place your head on his shoulder.

“I think … I like you too.”

And there you have it folks. I told you it was nothing to worry about. You may be wondering who died. Somewhere, sometime during the course of this story — some child in Africa died. And I’m sure it wasn’t a happy ending for them… Donate here.

The End.

HAHAHA, the opening was way better than the ending… I deeply apologize for my poor storytelling because I kind of thought I knew what I was doing until I realized I actually had no idea. I apologize once again for being a troll at the beginning and end.. haha
