It was your first time out in the city at that time of the night. People were running around from one shop to the other doing last minute holiday shopping. Sunggyu held your hand tightly as the two of you hustled through the thick crowd. He was claustrophobic and you didn’t fancy being around people that much either. “Is it always like this at midnight?” you asked him. “No just Christmas time. The shops close much earlier on all the other days,” he replied. You patiently waited for Sunggyu to find some open space so you could breathe properly and enjoy quality time with your boyfriend.

“There,” he cried, pointing to an open grassy area at a distance. The snow had been cleared up around the benches and under the trees. You two found an empty spot and sat down.

“This feels nice,” you whispered putting your head on his shoulder. “Hmmm,” he hummed. You chuckled when Sunggyu spread his hand to catch snow flurries. “You can’t catch them.”

“Yes I can,” he said and stood up. “See!”

You laughed when his attempt failed and the flurry melted as soon as it touched his glove. “It’s not going to work. Here… try this!” you stuck your tongue out trying to catch some flurries. Sunggyu watched you dance around like a baby deer. Your nose was as red as Rudolph and your cheeks quite complemented them.

“Aaaaachooo,” you sneezed.

“I’m guessing your mom won’t like me so much after this?” Sunggyu said with a scared expression. He feared your mother more than his own. “Relaaaxxx. She won’t hate you. I asked to let me come with you.”

“Still..” he said putting his arms around you. “You haven’t fully recovered from your cold and I dragged you out here.”

“I wanted to spend tonight with you. Don’t beat yourself over it.” You gave him a peck on the cheek.

“Don’t get me sick,” he made a face.

“Oppaaaa~” you pouted punching him lightly.

“Aish… I was joking. Come here!” he pulled you closer. Moments passed and he didn’t say a word. You were blushing therefore you didn’t dare look up at him. He knew you hated it when he stared at you like that.

“Stop it,” you whispered.

“Why?” he asked.

“You know why.”

Sunggyu leaned in and gave you a kiss~ longer than you had expected. “People are watching,” you said pushing him back. “I don’t care.”

“Can we go home now? I’m cold.” You asked.

“Already? But I wanted to make a snowman and buy some ice cream .. maybe go watch a movie or something.”

“Opppaaaaa~~ stop teasing me,” you fold your arms and moved away.

“I was kidding I was kidding.” He held your hand tightly so you wouldn’t struggle. “Let’s go home. It’s getting late and I don’t want you to get sick.”

“Will you make me some hot coco?” you asked.

“Of course! Anything for my princess,” he replied as the two of you walked back into the crowd of people. It was going to be a long walk back home.

He deserved it - [Sunggyu]

You looked over at him, still angry at how easily he had changed the topic. It wasn’t the first time he had done that. He was always like that. To avoid arguing with you he would just stop answering your questions or start talking about something completely different. He certainly was not like that when you first started dating. It only changed over the years very slowly, very gradually.

“I am so tired of your attitude,” you got up and mumbled in disappointment.  He looked up at you for a second. His lips quivered. He wanted to say something but he restrained himself. “I really don’t understand you Sunggyu… you’ve changed.”

“You should apply the same statement to yourself,” he said calmly but rolled his eyes when finishing.

“I would if you actually cared to give me feedback or at least listen to me,” you raised your voice this time.

“I do listen to you,” he said, also getting up.

“NO..YOU..DON’T!” you said pointing with your index finger on your other palm for emphasis. “You don’t listen to me and you DON’T even realize that.”

“You’re exaggerating,” he replied with a cold expression.

“I’m exaggerating? Huh! Just ..forget it.” You thought it better not to say anything. It wasn’t like he would actually listen to you. He never did. He was too hard headed to understand your side of the perspective. It was best that you walked away just like all the other times.

“Don’t walk away from this,” he said after you.

“Why? Does it bother you?” you smirked condescendingly.

****************************************************

Sunggyu hadn’t talked to you in two days. You knew you would have to be the one to apologize. He never did. He just expected you guys to start talking again and forget everything that happened. You were one of those people who forgave but never forgot. All his mistakes, although forgiven, kept piling up. They had started to create a burden on your heart.

It was the day of your birthday. You opened your eyes to a bright sun shooting its rays through the gaps between the curtains. Your phone buzzed the second you turned to get up. It was a text message from Sunggyu. You began to smile knowing he was going to wish you happy birthday.

‘I have two tickets to soccer game tomorrow. Wanna go?’ – the message read. You were a little disappointed but deep down you knew he had something better planned for that night.

Ye…’- you replied.

Morning turned into afternoon and afternoon into evening. Nothing happened. You had started to lose hope. Before you knew it, it was 30 minutes to midnight. You began to curse yourself for giving him another chance. You were never big on celebrating birthdays but this one was somehow important. You wanted him to make up for the way he had upset you the other day. Sometimes you felt like you cared way too much. You cared a lot more than he deserved. He neither claimed nor ever really showed that he cared. The whole relationship started to seem like a lie. A delusion of your own. You were stupid to think, he cared this whole time when he clearly didn’t.

With great fury you threw the pillow off the bed and buried your face in the other one. Your tears began to soak into the soft feather like object. It was going to be your only resort tonight. You cried, you cried a lot- almost till your eyes hurt.

************************************************

The next morning was nothing different from the one the day before. Except that this time you woke up to the faint knocking on the door. Lazily, you walked up to the door still rubbing your eyes and yawning.

“___________ah! Why are you not ready?” Sunggyu cried in surprise. He had surprised you even more with his sudden appearance. You looked at him strangely. “We have a soccer game to go to…remember?” he said, raising his eyebrows. You suddenly remembered the message he had sent you the day before. And then you also remembered how much you had cried the night before.

Without saying anything you closed the door on his face. Sunggyu stared at the closed door before him in shock. How could you do that to him? He was confused and oblivious to how much he had hurt you.

“___________ah! Open the door,” he said and banged on the door as hard as possible.

“GO AWAY Sunggyu…We’re done!” you yelled back. You thought he would whine some more, instead the knocking stopped. He was gone. He didn’t even try. This made you want to cry even more. How could he be so heartless and how could you be so stupid to believe he actually loved you? You had dreamed of spending the rest of your life with this man but all he was, was a waste of time.

Once again, you curled up under the undone sheets and let your tears soak into the soft pillow. You were going to cry till it stopped hurting. And if it was going to take forever than you were going to cry forever.

******************************************************

Three hours later:

Someone put their hand on your shoulder softly. You jerked up, your hands flying in the air for self defense.

“Calm down. It’s just me,” Sungguy whispered

“What are you doing here? I told you to go away. I’m done with you,” you said pushing him back harshly.

“________, __________, __________!” he said trying to hold you while you struggled.

“I don’t want to listen to anything you have to say. It’ll be useless just like all the other times,” you gave him a nasty look. You were trying to make your words hurt him.

“I know and I’m really sorry about all that,” he said with a sincerely apologetic face. Your ears perked at the five letter word. He had, for the first time uttered that word to you. You had started to loosen up. Seeing your anger slipping he advanced towards you once again.

“A sorry is not going to change anything!” you said pushing him once again. “I’ve finally realized that you really don’t care..so might as well not try Sunggyu.”

“I was stupid,” he said.

“And what makes you think you aren’t anymore?”

“Because I just realized that…and I’m just so so so sorry. I promise to listen to you..”

“I would have given you a chance but … the fact that..you couldn’t even remember my birthday made me realize I had been running after someone who will never be mine.”

“I got really busy with the band..”

“You’re not helping your case oppa. For once I expected you to actually do something because you never show that you care. And yet again you let me down. I feel like our love is one sided…”

“It’s not! I love you and you know that…”

“No I really don’t know that,” you said raising your eyes brows and folding your arms.

“__________ I do love you and I may be unsure about a lot of things in life but this is one thing I can say without a doubt….please… please believe me!” he begged. You looked at his face for a quick second. He had tears in his eyes- he was afraid of losing you.

The room fell silent. You were thinking and he was looking at you hopefully. The situation had tensed up too much. You honestly didn’t expect him to return. Things would have been much easier had he not. Now that he was standing across from you with a puppy dog face and a heartfelt apology you knew you couldn’t say no. You had to give him a second change. People change. Maybe he had too. And the fact that he was missing his soccer game just for you said a lot. Maybe he had actually started caring.

Sunggyu stepped outside the room and came back as quick as he had left. He had more than a bajillion  balloons in his hand with a small cupcake in the other.

“I’m sorry for being stupid and forgetting your birthday. It’ll never happen again. I promise,” he said advancing towards you. A smile cracked on your face reassuring him that it was okay and he could hug you.

Without waiting a second, he embraced you still holding everything in his hand. You chuckled at his silliness. That reminded you of why you had fallen for him in the first place. You wrapped your arms around him too. He was definitely worth giving a second chance too..
