Xiumin walked into the apartment, tired and exhausted from his activities for the day. You glanced at him from the kitchen with a calm smile. He lifted his fingers, signaling you to remain quiet. He wanted to surprise Hyunshik for coming home early that day.
“He’s asleep,” you said rather loudly. Xiumin gave you a bewildered look. “What do you mean he’s asleep at this hour? It’s only 6 in the evening.” His eyes traveled to the side window which was decorated with sunlight.
“I know. He was just really tired when he got back from school,” you replied.
“Apppaaaa!!” both you and Xiumin jumped around upon hearing Hyunshik’s cry. He wasn’t asleep after all.
“When did you wake up little one?” you asked as he ran toward his daddy.
“Just now when I heard the door open,” he replied. Xiumin lifted him up and planted a kiss on his puffy cheeks.
“You promised to take me to the park today. Can we go now?” he asked excitedly.
“Of course,” Xiumin replied. “I wouldn’t miss it for the world.” He let Hyunshik on the floor so they both could go and change.
A few minutes later, both father and son came out of the room dressed in matching red polo and khakis. You couldn’t help but shed a few tears. They both were your babies. Your cute little babies.
“Where did you guys get that from?” you asked.
“Appa got them last month remember?” Hyunshik said moving his big doughy eyes. You couldn’t recall but you pretended to remember.
“Aren’t you coming?” Xiumin asked you.
“I would love too but I still have to get dinner ready. Didn’t you say the members will be here by eight?” you asked.
“Yeah! I’m sorry it was so last minute,” he apologized.
“Oh don’t worry about it,” you said patting his shoulder lightly. The two boys held hands and walked out the door hoping and jumping. You want to hug them tightly and maybe take a picture or two but you were running out of time. You had a lot to get done.
***************************************************
“Seriously, how long will it take them to come back? ________ you need to control your boys,” Suho joked sternly.
“God knows,” you said shaking your head. Dinner was ready and everyone was already at the table. The door finally clicked open and in came Xiumin and Hyunshik holding ice creams in their hand.
“Are you kidding me?” you pouted.
“Opps sorry,” Both of them tried to hide the cones behind their backs. You looked at them furiously for their failed attempt and demanded that they give them to you. They obliged and the next second, the ice creams were in the trash. You couldn’t help but giggle on the inside though. Xiumin sat down with the other EXO members while you wiped Hyunshik’s chocolate covered face.
The members stayed long after, playing games, taking pictures and helping you clean up. It was a fun night. It always was when they all came. You and Xiumin got so busy with your work life that you hardly ever had fun. Hyunshik barely spent any time with you guys. This is why little promises like going to the park and having gatherings meant a lot to him.
**********************************************************
You and Xiumin lay in bed scrolling through the pictures from that night. Everybody looked so joyous. You couldn’t help but notice the matching twinkle in your husband and your child’s eyes.
“Thank you,” you blurted out of the blue.
“Thank you? For what?” Xiumin asked.
“For all of this!” you said.
“What do you mean?”
“For treating him like your own,” you said, looking away.
“He is my son,” Xiumin said pulling you closer.
“I know! I know,” you replied. He hugged you tightly and gave you a kiss on your temple. You couldn’t be more thankful to him for coming into your life and accepting you after your husband left you with a two month old son. You were more than grateful that your son had a father he could look up to. Xiumin and Hyunshik were the two best things that had ever happened to you.

There was no point in looking at the clock again. You had done it enough times in the past 2 hours that now you could tell the time just by each tick. He’d said he was going to be there but your hope was fading away. You wanted to trust him, you really did but with all the recent happenings you didn’t know where your relationship with him stood. If he cared then why didn’t he show it? If he loved you then why didn’t he say it? You were equally guilty for never confronting him. There use to be times when you could say anything and everything to him. It hurt you that all of that was changing. What was more scary was that both of you knew everything was falling apart.
It all started the night he knocked on your apartment door half drunk. You didn’t ask questions. He didn’t bother explaining himself. Not the next day not even the day after. The silences grew but neither of you tried to mend the broken bond. Sometimes you just wanted to blurt it all out. Tell him how you really felt. Tell him how much he was hurting you. But on the other hand, you were scared he was going to run away and never look back. You loved him but the question was- Did he love you back?
There was a light tap on the door, not a knock but just a light tap announcing his arrival. You put on your fake smile, wiped the twinkling teas from your eyes and walked to the door.
“Hey,” he said upon seeing your face.
“Hi,” you replied swinging the door back and forth lightly.
“Are you ready?” he asked. A faint smile was plastered on his face.
“Ye.” You nodded.
“Let’s go,” he said already turning around. He was halfway to the stairs when he noticed that you hadn’t moved an inch. He turned around finding you looking into blank space, your hand hanging low and your eyes twinkling once again.
“__________ let’s go,” he said- this time with more emphasis.
“Ah ye,” you mumbled back loud enough for him to hear.
***********************************************************
“There’s a tornado warning for tonight,” he said taking a bite of his meal. You took a sigh of relief that he had made the first move to talk.
“Jinja!” you exclaimed under your breath. You might as well have not said it since your voice muffled into the noise of the other happy couples at the restaurant. Some were giggling while others blabbered. He looked up at you for a good minute scrutinizing your every move. How you gathered the food on your plate into one corner and then cut it into small pieces. How you stuck your fork into it and quickly put it in your mouth, munching on it with your mouth closed. Your eyes hadn’t left the plate since the minute, the food had been served. Before that, they had wandered to every corner of the restaurant except to the direction of his face. He wanted to ask you why you were acting like that. Why you had been acting like that for so long? He had started to wonder that you just didn’t care anymore and maybe deep down he didn’t either. It wasn’t the same like the first time he had met you. It was outside a small coffee shop on a rainy day. He didn’t have an umbrella and you very graciously offered yours. He rejected politely the first time but as the weather got worse and the clocked ticked faster than usual, he accepted it.
“Where do you have to go?” you asked him.
“Noraebang studios.. it’s aaa two blocks away,” he had replied.
“Oh that’s on my way,” you had said.
The next time you saw him was during lunch hours. He always sat at a corner table with a couple of friends cracking jokes, eating lunch and being silly. You were scared out of your wits the first time he caught you looking at him. After that it became quite normal. Both of you were quite surprised that you had been having lunch at the same place, same time for over 6 months and just then seeing each other.
The silence, awkward eye contacts finally came to an end when he walked up to your table and spontaneously asked you to dinner one night. “I’d love to,” you had replied trying your best to cover your bright red ears. And that was start of a beautiful new relationship. He introduced each other to your friends. Started going out every night. He used to come over, you used to stay at his place for the nights. Walks on the beaches, laying on the grass watching the stars, eating ice cream during snow and singing karaoke. In one of those moments you had fallen for him and he, for you.
And now seeing all that you two had built, falling apart had broken you from the inside. He felt the same way but just never had the right words to say. You had started to think he wouldn’t understand your worries. He had started to believe you had stopped loving him.
**********************************************************
The walk back home was more disturbing than the one to the restaurant. He tried to make small talk but you just didn’t have to heart to talk. He used to hold your hand and pull you into his arms while walking back but he was too hesitant to do that anymore.
“Are you going to go,” you asked entering the apartment.
“Ye.. I have work,” he replied picking up his bag. You heard his footsteps faint into the corridor but suddenly they stopped. It was as if he was waiting for you to say something. There in that moment you knew you had to tell him. You had to tell him that you couldn’t do it anymore. You heard him say your name as you ran into his arms and hugged him tightly. Tears gushed out of your eyes uninvited. He patted your head embracing you tightly.
“I can’t do this anymore…” you said without any hesitance.
“What,” he gasped- his grip loosening on you at the same time. You pulled back and looked straight into his eyes. It was the first time in almost 2 months. For a second you wanted to take back what you had said. Just looking into his eyes made you realize what a grave mistake you had made. He was looking at you the same way. Thinking what you were thinking. His lips parted giving your heart a slight boost that he was going to reject your proposal.
He didn’t..
How could he say something when he knew he didn’t mean it? It was true, he needed a break just like you did. He respected you. He couldn’t lie to you and so without saying a word, he slipped his hand out of yours. Your lips quivered and your hands shook .Your clenched your fist tightly to control your emotions, seeing him walk out of your life. Your eyes shut automatically as your ears heard the first sound of thunder. The weather outside was quiet like the condition of your heart at that time.
***************************************************
2 years later in New York:
You stood under the shed of a small shop which was just big enough to keep you dry from the heavy rain. You had mentally cursed yourself a few hundred times for being cheap and not buying an umbrella. Life in New York wasn’t easy. You had to work three different jobs just to manage yourself. Nevertheless you liked it. You liked the fact that no one knew you there. No one questioned your past or asked you about your future plans. What would you tell them anyways when you yourself were unsure of everything.
“Do you want an umbrella?” someone asked.
“No ..thanky..” your words fell apart when you realized that the voice was very familiar to your ears. It was the same voice you had been longing to hear. You looked up and there he was standing right before you with the same faint smile on his lips. You felt a heavy lump in your throat. Your energy began to drain away. He took a step towards you but some workers from the store began to unload. Unload in heavy rain. Who does that? You shook your head, trying to forget that you had seen his face. You turned around and began to walk in the rain wiping the tears out of your eyes.
Then suddenly, two hands grabbed you and the next second you were dragged into an isolated corner of the street. He cupped your face in his hands, pushing your wet hair aside.
“Don’t run away..” he said. That’s all he needed to say for you to stay. Nothing more nothing less. He didn’t have to tell you that he had spent two years looking for you or that he was stupid for walking away that night. You understood it all, just like you understood everything he never said when the two of you were in love. Both of you were stupid for letting go off each other and you had realized it. Letting go wasn’t the solution. Staying together and talking about it was. 2 years of your life and his, had been wasted. But now that the two you were together again, you could finally make up for it. He kissed you repeatedly as if his lips had been longing to touch yours. The moment was so beautiful in its self that your stomach felt the butterflies just like the first time when he had kissed you. Nothing else mattered. Neither the rain nor the whispers of passersby’s. As long as he was with you everything was going to be fine.

“What are you doing?” Xiumin asked jumping on the bed besides you.
“Playing temple run.”
“Are you still trying to beat Tao’s score?” he asked.
His comment made you laugh so hard that your phone fell out of your hand.
“Thanks a lot Oppa,” you pouted.
“Mianhe,” he said snuggling with you.
“So what was your mom saying?” you asked.
“Yeah.. about that,” Xiumin said and scratched his head.
“What?” you chuckled.
“Umm I don’t want you to freak out or think that we’re taking this too fast because I can totally wait if you want me to,” he looked at you with questioning eyes.
“What do you mean?” you asked obviously very confused.
“I want you to meet my parents,” he said and closed his eyes tightly and clenched his fist, as if afraid of your response.
You loved it when he did that. You started giggling.
“So what’s wrong in that?” you asked giving him a kiss on his cheek.
“Oh my God, I thought you were going to say no,” he took a sigh of relief.
“I love you so so soooo much,” he said cuddling with you.
“I love you too,” you whispered.
*******************************************
“Anneyonghasaeyo,” you bowed and greeted Xiumin’s parents.
“Anneyonghasaeyo,” the replied and let the two of you in.
“Xiumin ah, she is even more beautiful then you described her,” Xiumin’s mother said pulling your cheeks. You were surprised. Usually, your ‘future’ parent in laws don’t act like that. Nevertheless you liked it.
You turned around and looked at Xiumin. He was smiling at you. He didn’t find that weird at all. You smiled back reassuringly.
“Come on in,” she said pulling you towards the sitting area.
“We are so happy to see you here. The last time this family saw a wedding was.. well when Xiumin’s father and I got married,” she said and burst into a laughter.
Xiumin had warned you that his parents could get a little carried away some times. You thought he meant that they were very strict but this was the complete opposite.
“So tell me something about yourself,” she said holding your hand.
“Aii, I work for a local bank,” you said.
Her expressions changed. “Will you work after the two of you get married?” she asked with a serious face.
“Aaa,” you didn’t know what to say. “It depends on what Xiumin says,” you said and looked at Xiumin.
He gave you a thumbs up. You smiled back.
“So, how many kids have the two of you decided to have?” she asked.
You were shocked. Why was she asking you weird questions? You didn’t know how to answer.
“Aaaa 2” you said closing one of your eyes as if estimating.
A smile spread across her face. “Xiumin ah, where did you find this girl? She is perfect for you.” She said and laughed.
Xiumin looked at you apologetically.
“I am fine,” you mouthed the words.
“Thank you,” he mouthed back.
All of you proceeded to the dinner table. So far everything was going great.
“Do you know how to cook?” she suddenly threw another question at you.
“Ahh, Ye!” you replied.
“Doesn’t look like it. My Baozi has lost a lot of weight.”
“Umaaaaaaa,” Xiumin whined.
You couldn’t help but laugh. Xiumin’s parents turned around and glared at you. You quickly stopped and went back to eating your meal.
After dinner, you offered to make tea for them. Xiumin’s mother couldn’t stop praising you.
“Xiumin ah, take her home safely,” she said as all of you stood at the door to say goodbye.
“I will Umma,” he said.
“She has no idea I live with you does she?” you whispered.
“Yep,” he whispered back. “You can imagine what will happen if she finds out.”
You giggled. His parents closed the door and the two of you began walking home.
“Gomawo,” he suddenly said breaking the long silence.
“For what?” you asked.
“For keeping up with eomeoni,”
“Oh the things I do for you,” you said wanting to pull his cheeks but he stepped away.
“Not you too,” he said.
You giggled again as you rested your head on his shoulder.
“I love you _______.”
“I love you too,” you replied.

“That was an amazing first dinner together,” you said as you held Xiumin’s hand.
“Yeah! It was. I still can’t believe that we’ve been going out for 2 months and we hadn’t been on a dinner together, alone.” He said looking at you.
You were looking at him with a big smile on your face. He was waiting for your response but you were too busy looking at him.
“What?” he asked.
You chuckled.” Nothing,” you said and looked away.
“No tell me,” he insisted.
“You are just soooo cute,” you said. “Sometimes I just feel like pulling your cheeks.”
“What?” he asked with a surprised but amused look on his face. “Isn’t that what guys are suppose to say to girls.”
You shook your head. “Anneyo. That’s too cheesy when guys say it,” you said.
Xiumin was about to say something but it suddenly started raining.
“Aiiiiisshhhh, we don’t have an umbrella,” he said, panicking. “We need to find shelter.”
The two of you ran down to the side of the street. You guys found a small telephone booth.
“That’s our best escape for now,” he said pulling you. Both of you were soaking wet and stuck in small box.
“Who’s genius idea was it to walk home after dinner?” Xiumin asked looking at you.
“Minahe,” you pouted.
“You look cute, when you do that,” he said putting his hand on your cheek.
You didn’t usually blush when Xiumin complimented you because you guys had been friends for so long but today you were. You looked away shyly.
“Oh my God, Ice cream truck!!!!!” you, suddenly cried with excitement as you saw an ice cream truck outside. “Pleaseee, can you get me one?” you asked.
“It’s raining outside!” he said, with a surprised expression.
“I know Mr. Obvious. But I want ice cream and you’ll eat it with me. It’s not like we’re kids and we’ll get sick.” You said pushing him out of the booth.
Xiumin ran towards the ice cream. He barely made it.
“Oh the things I do for you,” he said handing you the ice cream.
“Why didn’t you get one for yourself?” you pouted, while licking your Popsicle.
“I have schedules coming up. I can’t afford to get sick.”
“Oh please,” you said and shoved it in his mouth.
Xiumin couldn’t stop laughing. “What’d you do that for?” he asked licking it.
“Haven’t you seen it in movies. The couple walks home after dinner or shares an ice cream or plays in the rain. Soooo I am trying to spice up our relationship by adding some romance to it” you said and shrugged your shoulders.
Another fit of laughter took over Xiumin as both of you slowly finished the ice cream and waited for the rain to stop.
“Well this is fun,” you said sounding really frustrated.
“I’m going to call one of the guys,” he said.
You sighed and turned, to watch the heavy rain.
**************************************************
You banged on EXO M’s dorm door. Kris finally came out.
“What?” he asked with a stern voice.
“Why won’t you guys let me see him?” you asked, really annoyed.
“I dunno. Maybe because he is sick.”
You shot him a look.
“You have no idea how much trouble you’re in,” he said.
“What? What did I do?
Kris pulled you inside. His hold was very firm. He was really angry. He took you inside a small room.
“Xiumin couldn’t perform at all last week because he was sick. That’s cost us a lot.” He said while grinding his teeth.
“Well if you guys would have let me take care of..”
“That’s not the problem,” Kris cut you short.
“Then what is?” you asked.
“He is always so distracted around you. You take too much of his time. We need him to focus more on his career right now. He’s too nice to say no to you and you take advantage of that.”
Kris’ words were really cutting. You began to cry.
“I don’t want to hurt you or him and before this gets serious I’d suggest that the two of you break up.”
You were taken aback. “How could you say that?” you asked, demanding an answer.
“If you really love him and want to see him do better than it’s be better if the two of you just stay away from each other for a while.”
You were looking at Kris with a blank expression.
“Kris, you have no right to interfere in our relationship.”
“Would you say the same thing if I told you that the rest of the members agree with me?” he asked.
You were shocked. You did not expect this from them. You’d known them for a while now and this is how they were reacting. You were very disappointed.
“What?” you gasped.
“Ye,” he replied.
*************************************
“Where’s ________? Did she say she was coming? It’s strange that she hasn’t come to visit. It’s been almost a week.” Xiumin bombarded Kris with questions as he entered the room.
“Just lay down quietly and rest okay,” Kris said ignoring the questions.
“I asked you something!” Xiumin repeated.
Kris didn’t respond. Xiumin was upset now.
“Hyung, Please tell me where is she?” he insisted.
“She’s gone,” Kris whispered.
“What?” Xiumin sprang out of bed. “Why? What do you mean?” he asked.
“You know exactly why?” Kris replied.
“Is this still about what happened last week in the rain?” he asked. “If it is I am telling you it wasn’t her fault.” He defended you.
“It’s not just about that, it’s about everything else. Have you seen yourself around her? You need to focus on your career not her for now. Both of you are young and ‘BOTH’ of you have no idea what you’re doing… I told her to leave if she wanted you to be happy and since she does, she left. Now get back into bed. “
Xiumin didn’t have words to explain what he was feeling.
“Hyung, how could you do this to me,” he said as he stumbled on the bed.
“It’s not just me, this is what all the other members think too,” Kris replied.
Luhan and Lay entered the room. “Yeah, I think what Kris is saying is for the good. Your relationship is taking too much of your time.” Luhan said.
Xiumin looked at him. He was very hurt. He took a deep breath and got up.
“What you guys did was very wrong. You guys have ‘NO RIGHT’ to interfere in my personal life,” he yelled. His eyes were burning as he tried to fight his tears. Kris was surprised. Xiumin had never talked like that with any of the members. He was very calm and sweet.
“Don’t you see what she’s doing to you? We are fighting because of her!” Lay added.
“We are not fighting because of her. We are fighting because you guys have started making decisions for me and I do not appreciate that. If anything ______, wants me to focus on my career. She is very supportive. If one of us went wrong in this then it was probably me, certainly not her.”
“Xiumin..” Kris said but Xiumin cut him short.
“This is my life and I will be with whoever I want to be and I promise I will focus on my work in the future but please don’t take her away from me. She is the best thing that’s ever happened to me and you know that too hyung. I won’t be able to do anything without her. Do you want to see me suffering like this?” Xiumin said looking at Kris. Kris didn’t respond. He was thinking.
Xiumin turned around and looked for his shoes.
“Where are you going?” Lay asked.
“To bring her back,” Xiumin said, sounding annoyed.
“Wait,” Kris sighed. “We’ll come too.”
“Why?” he asked with a surprised look.
“We should apologize to her. You are right we shouldn’t have done this.”
Lay and Luhan gave Kris a confused look.
“If, the same thing happens to us tomorrow I am pretty sure we would react the same way. I know, I wouldn’t want to break my girl friends heart or not focus on my career and if Xiumin promises to keep a balance between both then I don’t see why we shouldn’t let them be together.” Kris said looking at Luhan and Lay.
“Gomawo,” Xiumin said as a smile spread across his face. “I am sorry for losing my temper.
“No worries Baozi,” Luhan said messing Xiumin’s hair.
**********************************************
Xiumin entered the room. You were crying with your face buried in your hands.
“______ ah” Xiumin called your name.
You looked up and jumped out of bed. “ I am so sorry. I will never force you to eat ice cream. I’ll always carry and umbrella with me even if it’s boiling outside and I won’t force you to come meet me all the time and you don’t even have to take me on dinner dates or the movies or even that spring festival next month. Just please don’t leave me,” you said between sobs.“You’re my baozi,” you said hugging him tightly.
Xiumin patted your back. “I won’t leave you for this world.”
You looked at him. He wiped your tears and kissed you.
“Ahem ahem,” Kris cleared his throat.
“Ohh sorry about that. ______, the hyungs have something to say to you.”
You glared at the three of them. They all held their ears and said, “Mianhe,” at the same time.
You couldn’t help but laugh.
“We’re sorry. We were wrong. Both of you crazies are perfect for each other,” Luhan said hugging both of you tightly.
“I am sorry, I shouldn’t have interfered in your relationship,” said Kris.
“I’m sorry too,” Lay added.
“It’s alright. You guys don’t have to apologize.” You said.
“Now who wants some coco?” you asked excitedly, trying to cheer everybody up.
“Meeee,” all the members replied at the same time.
You were glad that everything was back to normal.
